Before you go: tech inspection and the roll-bar question
The single most common way a Hellcat weekend goes wrong is at the tech shed, before a single run.
Track tech looks for the basics — no fluid leaks, brakes in good shape, no cracked glass, a properly working seat belt, a helmet meeting the Snell rating that track currently accepts, and a securely mounted battery. That last one catches Hellcat owners out: the battery lives in the trunk, and some tracks want a trunk-mounted battery strapped down and its positive terminal covered. Then there’s the rule that surprises people: a fast car needs a roll bar. Most tracks apply NHRA-style thresholds where cars past a certain elapsed time or trap speed require a roll bar, and substantially quicker cars need a full cage plus a competition license. - Drag radials. The real answer. A DOT drag radial is built to hook rather than spin off the line, and it is the single biggest time improvement available to a stock-power Hellcat.

Pressures: drag radials want meaningfully lower pressure than street driving to let the sidewall wrinkle and plant the contact patch. Launch technique: what the car gives you

- Line lock holds the front brakes so you can spin the rears for a clean burnout. This is your tire-prep tool, not a launch tool.
- Launch control lets you set a launch RPM and hold the throttle down; the car manages the leave. It’s genuinely useful, and it’s more consistent than most drivers’ right feet.
- Trans brake — where fitted — holds the car against the transmission so you can build load on the line and leave harder. It’s a factory feature on some SRT variants and not on others; don’t assume yours has it.
- Torque reserve / drag mode style features build boost while you’re staged on the higher-output cars.
Practical points that matter more than any of the above:
- Stage shallow. Rolling deep into the beams robs you of the rollout the timing system gives you.
- Be consistent. Two identical runs tell you more about a setup change than two different runs ever will. Change one thing at a time.
- Don’t chase the tree on run one. Get a baseline pass in the book before you start experimenting.

The manual Challenger is a different animal: the TR-6060 six-speed puts clutch care squarely in the conversation, and a clutch-dumped launch on drag radials is exactly how driveline parts die. The automatic cars run the ZF 8HP90, which is both quicker and far more forgiving to launch.
Suspension: let the car squat
A drag launch is about weight transfer — getting mass onto the rear tires at the moment you need grip. This is where a lot of Hellcat owners work against themselves, because the suspension setup that makes a car great on a road course is the opposite of what makes it leave hard.
- Stiff everything hurts you at the strip. A firmly-sprung, tightly-damped car resists the squat that plants the rear tires. Track-oriented coilovers cranked stiff can be slower off the line than a softer street setup.
- Adjustable damping is the useful lever. The classic drag approach is to let the front extend and the rear compress on the launch — softer front rebound, controlled rear — so weight moves rearward quickly and then stays there. If your dampers are adjustable, this is a free tuning knob; if they’re not, this is the argument for adjustable coilovers or drag-specific shocks.
- Locating the rear matters. Soft bushings and mounts let the rear suspension and differential move under load, which wastes energy and shock-loads parts. Firmer bushings and mount inserts are a common early drag upgrade.
- Weight. Pull the spare, the trunk junk, and anything else you’re hauling. It’s free.
Set the car up to launch, then set it back for the street — or accept the compromise knowingly. A dedicated drag setup is not a good daily-driver setup.
Heat: why round three is slower than round one
Supercharged cars get slower as they get hot, and the strip is the environment that exposes it hardest: a full-throttle pull, a slow return road, a wait in the staging lanes, another full-throttle pull.
The charge-air temperature climbing on each run is the mechanism. The Hellcat’s dedicated intercooler coolant loop — its own pump, reservoir, and heat exchanger — is what carries that heat away, and it needs both time and airflow. Idling in a staging lane on a 95°F day gives it neither.
What actually helps:
- A cooldown between rounds — keep air moving through the heat exchanger rather than sitting still.

- More capacity — a larger heat exchanger, or a chiller setup on serious cars — if you run repeatedly in heat. - Colder plugs and honest fueling. If the car is tuned, the plug heat range and gap and the fueling side both matter more at the strip than they do on the street.
Fuel is part of the heat story too: E85 runs cooler in the cylinder and is a common strip choice for exactly that reason, but it demands the fueling hardware and calibration to support it. Don’t switch fuels the night before an event.
What actually breaks
Here is the part nobody tells first-timers: fixing your traction is what breaks your driveline. While the tires spin, the wheelspin bleeds off shock load. The moment sticky rubber hooks, all of that torque slams into the drivetrain at once.
In the order they give way:
- Axle half-shafts — the classic Hellcat casualty, and it’s rarely gradual. A hard launch on drag radials twists or snaps a factory shaft. Upgraded 300M-shaft axles are the standard fix and the highest-value driveline dollar on a car that launches.
- Differential mounts and bushings — hard launches load the diff and its mounting hard; worn or soft mounts let everything move and load the next part in line.
- Driveshaft — a target on the hardest-launched, highest-output builds.

On the transmission side, high-output automatic cars eventually reach the torque converter and internals, which is billet-converter and built-trans territory. That’s a real budget step, and it belongs well after tires and axles.
Brakes are the quiet one. Drag racing is easy on brake pads compared to road-course work, but you still have to stop a two-ton car from very high speed at the top end, repeatedly. Before you leave home
- Confirm the track’s current rules — roll bar thresholds, helmet rating, battery mounting, tech hours.
- Check for leaks; top off fluids; verify brake pad life.
- Full inspection of tires and wheels, including lug torque.
- Pack: torque wrench, tire pressure gauge, jack and stands, basic hand tools, zip ties, tape, a quart of oil, and water.
At the track
- Empty the trunk and cabin of everything you don’t need. Pull the spare.
