Ask a Hellcat owner why their car felt slower on the third pull than the first and you’ll usually hear “it heat-soaked.” They’re right — and it’s one of the most misunderstood things about living with a supercharged 6.2. The engine didn’t get weaker and nothing failed; the car’s charge-air cooling ran out of capacity, intake temperatures climbed, and the tune quietly pulled timing to keep the engine safe. Two cooling systems, not one

What heat-soak actually is
Boost makes heat. Every time the blower packs more air into the engine, the air leaving the supercharger is hot, and the intercooler’s job is to cool it back down using that low-temp coolant loop. On a single pull from a cold start, the system has plenty of thermal headroom and the charge stays cool — that’s your best run.
Do it again immediately, and again, and the coolant in that little loop climbs in temperature. The intercooler can only cool the air down to near the coolant temperature — so as the coolant heats up, so does the intake charge. That post-blower intake temperature is often called IAT2, and as it rises the tune does exactly what a good tune should: it pulls timing to keep the engine out of detonation. Less timing means less power. That’s heat-soak — not a fault, but the cooling system saturating and the calibration protecting the engine.

The heat exchanger is the small radiator up front that rejects the intercooler loop’s heat to the air. It’s the single biggest lever on heat-soak. Reservoir / degas tank and coolant
The loop’s reservoir (degas tank) holds the low-temp coolant and lets trapped air separate out. A larger reservoir adds a little thermal mass, but a correctly filled, air-free loop is worth far more than a fancy tank. Charge-air heat-soak gets all the attention, but if you run your Hellcat hard — track days, long hot pulls, towing — the primary systems matter too:
- Engine coolant and radiator. Sustained high load can push coolant temps up; a healthy main cooling system (correct coolant, clean radiator, working fans) is the baseline.
